A tour of CHP developments in Auckland

Next was a visit to CORT’s new build development at McClennan Park in Takanini.

CORT have gone with two distinct development styles (each with its own builder) divided by an open space containing a small memorial marking the site of New Zealand’s first-ever powered flight on 5 February 1911 with the launch of the plane Manurewa No 1 by Leo and Vivian Walsh.

CORT CEO Peter Jeffries wanted the new homes to develop their own sense of community whilst also blending in well with surrounding developments.  Project 1= 8 one bed, 6 two beds. Project 2 = 16 one beds, 3 two beds.

A great deal of information was exchanged and the opportunity for further sharing and promoting news about the development pipeline of CHPs was both appreciated and highlighted as something that we need to do more of. It was also agreed to set up a learning workshop on building and managing affordable and social housing in apartment blocks – watch this space.

Members of the Auckland Community Housing Providers Network hosted Cate Kearney and Ed Leeson from Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust for a short tour of CHP developments in Auckland.

We started with a look around Accessible Properties block of 24 units (23 two beds and 1 one bed) in Manurewa.

The group returned to Mahia Road in Manurewa where Accessible Properties, Emerge Aotearoa and Penina Health Trust were all having homes (a total of 53 combined) built as part of a 112 unit “blind tenure” development that will include Kiwibuild houses and homes for sale.

The final stop was the Salvation Army at Royal Oak where the construction of 50 units across 3 blocks was well advanced with the first block approaching completion. Over lunch the Salvation Army and their design and construction team talked about their procurement and design approach across their Auckland developments which also includes sites at Westgate and Flatbush.
